To Alaska Native cultures, all animals are believed to have a non-human existence,
but have an immortal soul, called, “Inua,” in northern Alaska.  This spirit or Inua
breathes life into bones and flesh.  The Inua can give and retain an awareness of real
time thoughts.  The Inua is extremely aware of the respect the skin and bones of the
taken animals are given.  Utmost respect is given to fallen creatures to ensure the
food resources needed by the people.  The Inua can detect the individual agendas of
hunters and will present a physical animal only to those hunters who have good
“Karma.”  The Inua is also a shape shifter as Raven and Coyote are in other North
American aboriginal belief systems.  The Inua is not limited to living beings, and can
extend its energy to inanimate matter as well.

Generally, the Inua is represented by some form of round or circle-like formation,
which could be a reflection or indentation of some kind.  Examples can be seen as
symbols representing the hand and the spiral.  The hand and/or spiral are considered
the center of life from which the Inua travels to this world and back again, returning to
God’s gate.  Hunters often see Inua in the fur, feathers, or eyes of animals.  Inua is
sensed in the form of a reflection, or a pattern, or indentation.  Inua sees and feels
everything.  “It knows stuff.”  Inua rewards a hunter for being good, similar to “an eye
for an eye,” Karma, or “what goes around, comes around,” etc.
